SCE 4311- Rocks Collection Review
I gave this collection a rating of a five, because I believe it includes many interesting and helpful resources when teaching a lesson about rocks. The first resource “Is It a Rock?” is an excellent resource to understand students’ prior knowledge about rocks. This resource is an assessment, which will allow the teacher to understand any preconceptions or misconceptions students may have. The second resource, “Rocks and Minerals,” is a great resource for the teacher to use to brush up on information about rocks and the rock cycle. This would help the teacher develop his or her own background knowledge to better be able to teach the lesson. The following resource in the collection, “Bringing Outdoor Science In” includes many hands on activities to do with students in the classroom. “Spenser and the Rocks” is an excellent resource to bring science into language arts or vice versa and allow children to be introduced to rocks through reading the book. “Teaching Through Trade Books: Rock Wonderings” is a journal article, which discusses teaching about rocks through the use of different books. I believe this is an excellent way to incorporate science into our reading curriculum as well. “The Early Years: Rocks Tell a Story,” also provides many hands on activities that can get children involved in their learning. I believe this collection is an excellent resource as it features information to assist the teacher in his or her development of knowledge of rocks. It also features many resources, which provide activities for the children to learn in a hands on way. It also contains many resources, which list books that can be integrated into the language arts curriculum to emphasize what students have been learning about rocks.
