Two of my favorite literacy builders are word walls and Frayer models. A general Frayer model can be found here: http://www.justreadnow.com/strategies/frayer.htm. I change it up a little by taking out "characteristics" and replacing it with a picture/sketch or "non-verbal representation). The important part here is that they give relevant non-examples.
