I think that demonstrations are another great engagement tool. There are many inexpensive things (such as a Newton's cradle) that students love to interact with, yet can help demonstrate concepts.

Our school does no allow extra credit. However, students that underperform on tests have the opportunity for grade recovery. They have to complete remediation work before taking a new test. They receive the higher score of their 2 tests, with a cap at 70 points. This helps struggling students.

I agree that Snap Circuits are awesome, but a bit pricey. I found a set at the local Goodwill thrift store.
Another option is buying battery holders, alligator clips, etc. from amazon.com.

The author presents a thorough plan for introducing students to the concept of magnification. The students will enjoy looking at objects through tools with various magnification levels. Although they would enjoy it, it might be a bit simple for middle school students.

This SciPack is very well done. It covers the basics of atomic structure in some detail. As a middle school teacher, I found this to be a perfect refresher prior to teaching the material in my class.
