Assessing for Achievement Review
1. I chose this article because it talks about integrating formative assessments into the 5E lesson model which is what I will be using in my classroom, especially for Math and Science. Students sometimes feel very overwhelmed with the traditional sit-down assessments, where they have to sit down for a specific amount of time and complete the test. This is much better.
2. I learned that as a teacher, I must “relate my assessments to the types of work my students were (are) doing (Marzano 2006).” I also learned that a checklist is a great and easy way to assess the students for understanding. The majority of children like sharing their interesting findings and results, and communication is a big part of what I will be needing to teach my students. Therefore, having children share what they have learned is a great form of assessment.
3. TEKS 4.2.F: The student is expected to: communicate valid oral and written results supported by data. This TEKS shows the importance of giving my students the opportunity to share their findings, which is also a great opportunity to assess them for understanding.
4. I agree with the main focus of the article which was that there are opportunities for assessments in each stage of the 5E lessons. These truly assess understanding and performance, without the test anxiety that many children experience.
