Tue, Nov 13, 2012 9:29 PM in iPads in the classroom
In the near future my school (elementary) will be getting Ipads for the students to use. I am excited to use them and I'm sure my students will be too. I know that there are thousands of apps that are used for educational purposes and since our world is leaning towards utilizing more and more technology, I'm sure that teachers will find apps to help with any subject area. I recall seeing apps f...

I absolutely love this idea! Lapbooks are new to me and I think that it would be a great way for my students to end a unit (my culminating activity). I can visualize it working for all other subject areas as well. I am excited to try this out in my class in the near future. Thank you for sharing this great idea!

This year was the first year that I changed my nutrition unit to make it more meaningful for my class. In the past I did the food pyramid/plate, food groups, and a little about the nutrition of each food group. This year, after reviewing the SciGuide, I decided to go a little more in depth about nutrition. The SciGuide had a lesson using fast food places such as McDonalds and KFC. I used the l...

Nutrition: Grades 5-8
Thu, Oct 25, 2012 5:33 PM Nutrition SciGuide
This SciGuide was filled with a lot of useful information about Nutrition. It addresses the following: Food, Category of Nutrients, Body Functions, and Food Choices. It was very easy to navigate with all the sub heading and links. The SciGuide map was also useful to visually see how all the topics are related to Nutrition. This SciGuide provided information about important nutritional topics such as calories, fats, organs involved in our body system and much more. One useful part of this SciGuide that I used to help guide my students towards better nutrition was found in the Category of Nutrients section. The part that I used and adjusted to make it appropriate for my class was the section using McDonalds and their nutritional values. This highly interested my class. The outcome from using that section was that my class realized that fast food places can be healthy places to eat.
Mon, Apr 09, 2012 4:42 PM Chemical Reactions Review
This SciGuide contains 4 different sections about chemical reactions. The first section covers atoms and molecules in a chemical reactions, the second section shares 3 types of chemical reactions, the third shares useful resources and lab experiments, and the last section introduces how all the different parts of the SciGuide apply to things in the real world. The resources that were available within the SciGuide were very useful and I used them to help further my understanding of chemical reactions. I found this SciGuide to be very useful for developing lessons for my class.
Tue, Oct 04, 2011 5:43 PM Energy Sciguide
This sciguide was filled with a lot of information about Energy. It addresses the following: Recognizing Energy, Thermal Energy, and Changes in Energy. It was very easy to navigate with all the sub heading and links. The sciguide map was also useful to visually see how all the topics are related to Energy. I liked how there were links to websites with articles, video clips, and lesson/activities that could be used within the classrooms. The lesson plans provided with this sciguide was a bit overwhelming to look at because it included all the standards that are covered within the topic of Energy. For me, I would like to see the lesson plan broken down by standard or benchmark to make it easier for me to use and understand.
