One misconception I see my third grade students have is that a mixture can only be related to food. I really like the options you gave on how to take advantage of those 15 minutes to teach science. I hadn't thought of including science centers throughout the day and then discussing it with them. I would also say to switch around the centers every two weeks and incorporate one science center with the weekly theme for science that way it reinforces what you teach.
