Page Keeley consults with school districts and organizations to build capacity for formative assessment and understanding student thinking. She has authored 22 books and over 50 journal articles. Page retired from the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance, where she was the principal investigator of three NSF-funded projects. She received the Susan Loucks-Horsley Award for Leadership from Learning Forward in 2009, the Outstanding Leadership in Science Education Award from NSELA in 2013, and the Distinguished Service to Science Education Award in 2017. Page began her career as a research assistant in immunogenetics at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine. She became interested in education and taught middle school and high school science for 14 years. She is a recipient of the Presidential Award for Secondary Science Teaching (1992) and the Milken National Educator Award (1993). Page served as the 63rd President of the National Science Teaching Association.

From Flower to Fruit

Uncovering Children's Ideas about Fruits!

This is an excellent book for "uncovering" and addressing children's (and adults') ideas about fruits and flowers. The book clearly addresses a very common misconception about what a fruit is by contrasting the every day, colloquial definition of a fruit, with the scientific definition of a fruit. It is also a terrific resource to use with the the NGSS to develop understanding of disciplinary core ideas related to structure and function (LS1.A) and the growth and development of organisms (LS1.B).Written in Konicek-Moran's characteristic style, it is engaging, highly thought provoking, and scientifically accurate. I was so enthralled with this book that I followed up by writing two formative assessment probes about flowers and fruits to use in the Uncovering Student Ideas about Life Science collection!So glad to be able to share this book as an example of a trade book to support the scientific practice of obtaining information!
