Hi all, I am creating a 2 week block plan on our solar system and one of my days focuses on the phases of the moon and why it changes shape. I was thinking about using a flashlight activity with a globe and a white piece of paper to represent the moon. Hi there, I am a pre-service teacher planning a two week unit on the solar system. One of my day topics is about constellations. What are some of the most effective ways to teach 2nd graders about contellations and why they form a shape? Any useful resources or hands on activites to get them engaged? Thanks!

A Week for Space

Wonderful resource

I thought this resource was great for a teacher trying to make time to teach about space. It separates the teaching of the solar system for k-4th grade and 5-8th grade. Each section lays out exactly what you should be teaching your students and how though a one week unit known as space week. It extends this information to books and other resources you could use to help enhance the lesson.

Great Review of Space

I found the Solar System Sci-pack to be extremely informative. I loved how each topic was broken down into smaller units with an outline on the side. With the interactive elements and videos, I felt like I learned a lot of information for this. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to understand our solar system before teaching it. The assessment on the other hand was quite difficult. Some of the questions it asked was not reviewed in the sci-pack and some of them were very confusing. The ones that had a select more than one answer response were difficult to answer, especially because if you missed one or got one part wrong, the entire answer was deemed wrong. There was no way of knowing which questions you got wrong. But aside from the assessment, this is a great learning tool.
