One thing I forgot to mention was I also like virtual labs because it is a great way to create stations, especially for large classes. With limited resources, I can have students do independent work on the computers while I work with the other half on a hands on lab.
If there is a lack of virtual earth science labs, maybe you can create WEBQUEST for students?

Our school uses Compass learning virtual labs.The labs are great and they are easy to use.Its a give and take when it comes to virtual labs.
Virtual labs are great when there are large classes and only one teacher. The impending danger of someone getting chemical burns, something exploding, or some other catastrophe occurring greatly reduces when doing labs via computer. There is no use of mate...

I was just introduced to SKILLS BASED GRADING and was wondering if there is anyone out there that is familiar with skills based learning in Environmental Science? And if so, what skills/content areas are key to understanding environmental science?

Science of Food Safety: Grades 9-12

My students are starting an aquaponics system, this SciGuide has informational lessons and are relevant. Some basics that this SciGuide covers are foodborne illnesses and points of contamination and hygiene.
Some parts of this SciGuide that I utilized were: having the students research the top 12 pathogens that cause foodborne illnesses and understanding the farm-to-table continuum. These sections helped students understand the importance of hygiene and how to prevent illness.
To the lessons, I added a microorganism ubiquity lab. This allowed student to physically see the presence of bacteria from places that they swabbed. This is a great way to get students engaged into something they cannot see with their own eyes.

To break this site down into more manageable chunks for student comprehension, I created a few thinking maps.
Overall, I think that this SciGuide is full of great ideas. I would just add a few more engaging lessons/demonstrations to help students buy into learning about something that is not visible to the naked eye.
Force and Motion

Who doesn't want to play with toys in the classroom. This science guide was full of engaging activities that applied Newton's Laws. It made for critical thinking and allowed students to apply Newton's Laws to real life situations.
What is also great about these lessons are the materials are either readily available, free or cheap.
Overall, I felt that these lessons worked great with the students and was a great way to introduce and have students critically think about physics.
Science of Food Safety

I thought the engaging introductions were a great jumping point especially if seen from a students point of view. I enjoyed how it started with a common issue that occurs in life (e.g. a child having stomach issues and background information) and how to understand the situation, the packet links the situation to cell biology.
There was a nice variety of activities and videos that kept the lesson from being monotonous.
Throughout the lessons, there were some quiz questions appeared before the readings that gave the answers, I do not know if this was done on purpose or not, but I think organization would reduce frustration when searching for answers.
Overall, great packet. Informational, content was nicely organized and great resources to help understand concepts.
