I too am a pre-service teacher and am unsure of the best way in which to grade fairly. I agree with you, students whom have just quickly finished right before class just to finish should not get an “A”. Grades should be earned and fair to all students. Your lesson sounds like a fun and interactive activity that students will be able to remember easily because it involves the students to be creative to re-create the digestive system. I have heard of kits for teaching science but didn’t realize that they could be used in the lower level grades. I am more familiar with the middle grades. I agree with you that getting the kids thinking and engaged is a key to increasing their questioning. I like your ideas of getting them interested in the topic before reading.
