My favorite SciPack is also the Nutrition SciPack. I thought that it contained important information that tied in to my state's standards. I also thought that the simulations and pictures that were included in the SciPack were very useful.

As a teacher in Hawai'i, I have many students that have never experienced the four seasons. We have the typical summer season and our winter season is actually more of a rainy season. Gravity and Orbits SciGuide

This SciGuide is organized into three themes: Gravitational Force, Orbits, and Universal Gravitation. Unfortunately, I do not think this SciGuide will be very useful for planning lessons for upper elementary. The concepts that the lessons and activities focus on are way more advanced than the HCPS III benchmarks for grade 5. That being said, I think that the lessons and ideas that are in this SciGuide would be perfect for a middle or high school teacher to adapt for his or her classroom. The themes are organized and have many interactive simulations, Internet links, and extension activities that can be incorporated into lessons/units.

SciGuide: Nutrition Grades 5-8

This SciGuide is separated into four themes: Food, Categories of Nutrients, Body Functions, and Food Choices. I think this SciGuide is a terrific place to start if you are planning a unit on nutrition. I thought that the lesson plans that are listed under each theme were all very interactive and engaging. There are also many links to web sites that you could use to gather more lesson ideas.

Coral Reef Ecosystems

This SciGuide is very comprehensive and follows a logical and natural succession of topics. It is separated into three themes: Coral Reef Biology, Coral Reef Ecosystem, and Coral Reef Conservation. I say that this SciGuide follows logical topics because students it makes sense for students to learn about what coral reefs are actually made of and then learn about the various animals that call the coral reef their home. After learning about these two topics, students should learn about how they can help protect and preserve the coral reef. Each theme had many links that students and teachers can explore. Many activities had pre-made worksheets that students can work on when exploring the web sites. I think this SciGuide is a great place to start if a teacher is planning a unit on the coral reef.
