Collection Review SCE4310
Dear Cassandra,
The collection that I chose to complete my review on was the Properties of Matter collection. This collection was made up of six journals that deals with matter and the properties of matter. Each article described activities and lessons that are useful for all grade levels. Certain lessons can be used for older grades such as grades third-fifth. Other lessons work best for early childhood science lessons. In these articles, some lessons are made using the 5E Method. One of the journals explains the importance of utilizing the right strategies and resources in order to teach children about Matter. When teaching the properties of matter, the students should become familiar with the vocabulary. Also, teachers need to understand that planning for a lesson such as this one takes a lot of thought and planning. Lessons about matter need to attend to the student’s misconceptions. Students have trouble understanding the properties of matter and what defines a solid, liquid and a gas. This collection is well put together and has a lot of information that can help teachers who are interested in teaching the unit about Matter. As a future, educator I like the idea of planning for lessons and making sure that research has been conducted before performing a lesson or experiment. These journals also provide useful hints that can help teachers explain to students about the connections that are made between Matter and the importance in our everyday lives. A constant pattern that I noticed among all of the journals, was the implementation of classroom discussions. It is important that most lessons include class discussions and peer communications.
