Formative Assessment Probes: To Hypothesize or Not
Sun, Nov 05, 2017 1:16 AM
Powerful!
Who hasn't used the term "educated guess" to describe a hypothesis? Page Keeley brilliantly explains why this phrase is incorrect and misleading, and explains what true scientific hypotheses are (and what they are not).
Formative Assessment Probes: Is It Erosion or Weathering?
Sat, Nov 04, 2017 4:54 PM
Fantastic Tool
This formative assessment probe is a great way to gauge whether students understand the difference between weathering and erosion. I find that a lot of my students get the two confused since they're so closely related, and we spend a lot of time talking about the difference between the two. I've just finished teaching about weathering/erosion/deposition, and want to use this tool to assess their understanding. I wish I had it at the beginning of this unit so I could have done a pre/post-test using it!
I also love the reflection provided. It helps students assess their own learning and show how their thinking has changed through the unit.
Earth's Changing Surface

Great refresher!
I've taught 5th grade science for 11 years, so we always touch on changes to Earth's surface in my class. My students always have deeper questions that I'd love to be able to explore in more detail, but I haven't always had the answers for them or ways to explore their questions. This SciPack helped me brush up on my understanding of this huge topic and gave me insight into how I might be able to answer their questions and reminded me of high school concepts I haven't thought about in years.
