I am in a 2nd grade classroom. We use our science notebook as often as science is taught. They record their observations, both with drawings and writing. They also categorize items and glue into handouts from the teacher. We don't ever really copy things off the board because that's not what they're at school for, if they all need something my cooperating teacher simply provides a handout.

I think it is important to always provide clear instructions and expectations. Before I give a lesson, we always go over expectations and I ask them to hold one another accountable. I think a great way to do this is to present it in relation to their lives. Maybe include a song that has the beat of a popular song, or use objects that they are familiar with. Also, do hands-on activities. I've started asking myself, "Would I want to sit through this lesson?" to ensure that my lessons are both engaging and relatable for my students.
