I looked at this because I'm new to teaching science. However, I'm a teacher's kid, a mom, and have taught for 13 years. Every once in a while, kids will just get something in their heads. Thanks for sharing this! I love introducing the lesson with a book and closing it with a video. That would really help solidify the hands on learning. I did a similar lab and had my LEP students create a table where they drew a picture of their stations, told whether they were a mixture or solution, and wrote a brief explanation of how they knew.

This article is excellent for practical ideas to make sure elementary students understand density as something more than just heaviness. I absolutely love the simple graphic figures. I will be using this!

Although my fifth graders should already be familiar with these concepts when they come to me, I found that there remained a small group of them that held onto old erroneous ideas.
