Pamela, Your post is an excellent example of the power of this site! I always download to my iPod, but I always did books, I never even thought about how I could use that time to work on my science curriculum. It seems so obvious now, but I never gave it a thought. Thanks so much for sharing and I will be checking out those different sites you and others listed.

The school I teach at uses a DVD set and workbooks for our science curriculum. It's called Kid Physics and it's terrible! We have asked to change our science to match the rest of the school (FOSS- not great but better) but have been told the FOSS Kits do not meet our standards and benchmarks. I'm so sorry, I didn't realize all these posts had come after mine. I am still getting the hang of this site. :-) I will upload pictures of the kit materials, as well as the completed brush bot. IT lasts quite a while with just a battery. Shawna, I teach 6th grade, but this is good for a wide variety of grade levels. Thanks all!

Chemical Reactions

This sciguide was organized into four different sections about chemical reactions. The first part was about atoms and molecules in a chemical reaction. The second discusses three types of chemical reactions. This part was most interesting to me in gaining some of the background knowledge and as a refresher. The third part provides resources for teachers and possible lab experiments that can be done with students. The last part explains how all of these different parts actually apply to things in the real world, which of course is the most important piece. Overall I enjoyed it, I thought at times it was a little more technical than it needed to be, but I have definitely gained from going through it.

Best for Upper Grades

I was impressed with this unit for several reasons. First, how easily they explained basic physics of elements, atoms and how electrical currents work. I will especially be incorporating the part dealing the Ammeter as this is critical to our Challenger Center studies. However, the guide went from a simple easy to use lesson, to one that seemed much more advanced. Possibly it should be broken up into several sections so one part could be used for lower grades and the other for upper grades. Ex. Eddy Currents and NDT. Even I was a bit lost on those parts. Overall, worth exploring if looking for concise materials and examples to explain the basic concepts.
