I definitely agree that looking at the standards or any required curriculum is a great way to begin. Being prepared and knowing what is required is necessary for any subject. Once you know the standards, finding activities is the easy part. You can find a lot of great lessons on NSTA that also align with the NGSS 5E/3D model.

I believe a good place to start for ELL students or any students in general is looking at what the students already know. Proficiency comes with practice, any practice you can give students will help them in the long run. Probing questions can help call to students' background knowledge and will help to build language skills.

I agree that food is "worth it." Students always learn more when an activity is fun. On the topic of impatience, one of my professors recommends that you always bring extra food or candy that the students can eat while they work so they don't eat their materials.
