Teaching Scale in Models

This activity was fun and concrete for students! The instructions are clear and my students were able to make the computations. We then applied the technique to a solar system model and they were able to evaluate its accuracy.

The research project in this article is such a perfect accompaniment to our grass growing project I had to give it a second shout out! Our grasses are up, we've read about eutrophication and its consequences and now my students are doing individual research projects on Chesapeake Bay organisms.

Modeling with computers and hands on

This is another excellent webinar from NASA Explorer Schools. Great lessons for hands on modeling of planet temperatures based on position in the solar system. And a great computer model for simulating insolation as a function of distance. Additional resources are lessons for modeling weather and climate with hands on concrete manipulation which can then be supplemented with the computer model.
