The teacher acted correctly. Even if the teacher believes this is the best opportunity for the students to learn, rules are rules. It would be unfortunate if something were two happen to those two students outside of the classroom, when they were never allowed to leave. Hopefully, the teacher gave those students work that relates to whatever the field trip may have covered.

A cool activity for over the summer can include planting a plant.
Something that they can observe over a certain amount of time (2 months)
That will keep them active within the whole summer that the students are out of the classroom.

I think there are many different ways to get students involved with science, especially at an early age. If you really think about it, you can incorporate science into any hands on activity. For instance, you can make a lesson plan using magnets. On those magnets you can add figures or objects to get the students interested. the magnets will connect and any movement will get the students excited. ...
