Wed, Nov 29, 2017 6:36 PM in Helping Students Become Excited About Space
Hello, my name is Adam Salberg and I am a pre-service teacher, currently preparing to student teach in a 7th grade classroom. One of the main topics in the class is astronomy. I am pretty excited to teach about space, but I am concerned that students might not be interested. It seems that space can be seen as so far away that it is impossible to comprehend for many students. I know there will be s...

Hello, my name is Adam Salberg and I am a student teacher in a middle school science classroom. I am preparing for my thirteen weeks of students teaching in the spring and have been beginning to think about my own personal teaching philosophy. I just completed a two week unit, and I had students fill out an evaluation of my teaching. One of the most common criticisms among the students is that the...

Universe: The Sun as a Star
Wed, Nov 29, 2017 6:20 PM Sci-Obeject Review
Overall, this SciObject could be a great resource for any science class which is discussing topics related to astronomy. The information is explained in ways that could be understandable for both teachers and students. The Object provides videos and simulations of space which could be very useful for instruction. It allows teachers to introduce information about the sun and other stars in the universe in ways that a students can relate to. Another thing that I liked about this Science Object is that it allows a teacher to prepare for inquiry based lesson that are highly effective. Overall a great Science Object.

This collection does an excellent job of describing inquiry and its importance in a science classroom. The Simplifying Inquiry Instruction article in particular was a great article to read for beginning science teachers. The article begins by introducing the idea of inquiry which clarifies the term. One of the main points of the article was to identify inquiry as answering questions through the use of data analysis. The article also later breaks down the levels of inquiry which vary in respect to the roles of the teachers and students in the lesson. As young educators in the field of science, I think inquiry is very effective because it allows students to practice critical thinking, connecting main ideas, and coming up with alternative solutions when an expected result does not occur. The articles use of tables and headings allows the reader to feel organized while reading. I believe that any beginning science teacher would find this collection of articles covering inquiry's main ideas very useful when lesson planning.
