Fantastic New NSTA Resource! *Science Notebooks*
Science Notebooks in Student-Centered Classrooms is an extremely powerful book for many important reasons. First, Science Notebooks is one of the few resources that addresses modern standards and contemporary scholarship in science education (it is closely tied to the three dimensions of the NGSS, highlights sensemaking strategies, and emphasizes productive science discourse). Secondly, it does a superb job of stressing the types of mathematical practices advocated by the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Mathematical thinking and promotes technical, informative writing desired of the CCSS-ELA. Finally, I enjoyed the consistent theme of the critical importance of valuing student's voices and providing more equitable experiences for ALL students.
What struck me as genuinely remarkable about Science Notebooks is that Jessica Fries-Gaither provides examples of student work that bring practice, modern standards, and research to life. The hype around this book will be unquestionable. It provides crucial insight for creating more cohesive curriculums and lessons.
I will be using the ideas in Science Notebooks with students and teachers and highly recommend it to all science educators.
