Our campus has taken advantage of the University of Texas' Explore UT Open House held every March. This event provides our 5th graders with a great experience, however I am wondering how others have partnered with local or major universities to provide more students and teachers with relevant strategies for teaching and learning.

We have taken a reflective approach to our field trips and field experiences. Writing is tough to require and assess if it is always guided or teacher directed. The reflective approach allows us to discover misconceptions and limitations of our teaching.

We have used the Brace Map and the Tree Map a great deal in science. The use of aligning colors and integrating writing make the use of Thinking Maps even more effective.

Collaborating for Communication

After reading the article, I see how communication can be integrated into any lesson, not as a culminating activity, but as part of the learning. We seem to neglect listening and speaking skills as we assume they will develop on thier own. By emphasizing these skills and following up with reflective practices students will build confidence and be better prepared to justify their work as opposed to deferring the adult's opinion of their responses. The following quote furhter validates the importance of reflective practices and communication: Many scientists agree that it is through the process of reflection, either by discussion or writing, that the learning is further enhanced and made more memorable.
