I think a cool demonstration to do on the first day of school could be to do stations with enclosed boxes and have the students stick their hands inside and record their observations to figure out what is in each box. It's really fun!

You could maybe try to incorporate an activity where they can go out and collect some things that they can make something out of. They could then go back to the classroom build/make it and share it with the class. This could be an introduction to the lesson that could really get them thinking about what natural resources they use or come in the contact with in their day to day life.
