I think with an activity like this it is really important that students are given a lot of examples, especially for second grade. I also think using a raw egg would be a lot easier to identify as well when it breaks/cracks. Are straws and cotton balls the only materials they are allowed to use?

I student in a third grade ELL classroom and I think my students benefit a lot from keeping an interactive journal. I believe all students can benefit from reflecting in their journal about the science lesson for the day, not just the GT students. Reflections is a good way to take an informal assessment and students will be able to write at their own ability level.

I am currently student teaching in a third grade math and science classroom, and even though we have an allotted time for science, time is usually taken out of science to allow more time for math. In third grade students are tested on reading and math, therefore most teachers are more concerned with the math content rather than the science.
