I believe that when it comes to addressing common science misconceptions, they have to be approached on an individual basis as they relate to the lesson at hand. With that being said, I suggest attacking the misconception by proving the truth that debunks it. That 'proof' may be in the form of a live demonstration, a video, reading resources, or more.

From my little amount of personal experience and from my observations of other teachers and their classrooms, I think at a certain point you have to settle for the fact that they you will not get a response. I have seen several teachers attempt to communicate with a parent and document each attempt, but eventually they had to settle with the fact that no response was going to happen.

I am a student teacher right now, so I do not have too much prior experience, but I have not had too much success with using a reward system to motivate children to participate in the classroom.
