I agree, try the activity yourself before you teach it to your students, just to see what things could go good or bad. Let the children explore ideas, don't jump to the end result let them solve the problems.

I am currently a student, studying early childhood education so I haven't had my own classroom yet. But, I think you could do an activity with sinking and floating objects. You could also do a center with worms in it. Iv'e seen teachers shred newspaper and dirt and put it into a tub with a lid. Then they get real live worms and put them in the tub and let the students dig around in it with plastic...
