Importance of assessing
I reviewed the collection, How Do We Know If Students Are Learning by Kathy Sparrow on November 23, 2019. This collection consisted of 15 different journal articles and book chapters. The articles covered different ways to assess the students and the importance of it. One idea was the importance for pre-assessments, this gave the teacher an idea of what level the student was currently at and what previous knowledge they had for the teacher to scaffold from. This collection was also very useful for teachers to find new forms of assessments including journaling and graphic organizers. Graphic organizers vary but they are powerful tools that are easy to implement in any classroom and let you assess student learning that is conceptual, hierarchal, cyclical, and sequential. The articles highlighted the importance of asking questions throughout the lesson to check students understanding and learning. This collection also showed support for giving students assessments that include elements of choice and multiple ways for them to demonstrate their understanding such as drawing, writing or verbally. This is a useful resource for any science teacher to study to understand the important of assessing and different ways to assess students. Some of these resources had tools a teacher could use in any subject area. Overall, I would recommend any future teacher review this collection.
