I actually just taught food chains to my third grade classroom not too long ago. I used the BrainPOP video as well. However, I did not use it until I introduced the concepts of thriving and perishing.

I definitely agree. There is only 45 minutes each day devoted science, and social studies just gets woven into reading. I am currently student teaching in 3rd grade and my students will not take a standardized state test that covers science until they're in 5th grade. There is a game called, Where's Howie's Owie. There is a great blog post about this game and how it can be used not only to identify body parts, but to develop young children's speech, inference-making abilities, and 1-2 step direction following skills.
