My NSTA / Peers / Crista Smith

I am a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential Candidate at San Diego State University. I am currently student teaching in a fourth grade classroom. I have had several teaching experiences in the past that involved science education. I volunteered for a program called SciTrek at UCSB and helped teach science curriculum being developed at the university to second and fifth grade students. In addition, I worked as a Youth Development Professional at a local Boys and Girls Club. During this time I created and ran three weekly after school programs focused on science: Science Club, Earth Club, and Astronomy Club. All of these experiences were very rewarding and introduced me to the impact science can have on a child's imagination, creativity, and curiosity.

    Citizen Science

This resource collection focuses on Citizen Science efforts for elementary school students. The practice of Citizen Science allows students to engage in authentic scientific work in their community and contribute to larger bodies of knowledge used in real research. This collection explains what Citizen Science is and gives some great examples of how it can be incorporated into your classroom curriculum for a variety of topics, with everything from water quality to entomology to butterfly migrations to rain fall data.
