Hi Page, I have used the probes at the beginning of a unit. I am currently teaching seventh grade, and it can be difficult to get some students to respond, the easy answer is "I don't know". With encouragement, I can get most to respond in some way. I now also ask that they add one or more questions that they have about the content of the probe. Thanks Cris - The earthquake recordings will be interesting to show my class. We have shown the video before, I think it emphasizes the many seismic events that occur on a regular basis, more so than a data list. I will use both!

I have discussed this in my eighth grade classes, after introducing geological timelines and risk. Students are aware of storm and earthquake events, yet think of volcanos as very localized activities.
