You can have students take home critters(mealworms), to analyze and observe. They get to see the life cycle of a beetle, and conduct experiments.

I have noticed the same thing. Teachers need to understand that all subjects are important, and that giving more importance to those tested just causes more stress. Kids miss out on a lot when they are not exposed to certain subjects, especially science.

Yes. I think all students should have a science journal, not just gifted and talented students. The more you challenge your students the better they perform.
