Improved Learning with Ongoing Assessment
This article discusses the importance of providing your students with many embedded, or formative, assessments throughout the lesson. This means that instead of giving one test at the end of the lesson to assess student knowledge, you assess student knowledge all throughout the lesson, instead of testing their memorization skills at the end. This is important because, teachers need to assess themselves on how their lesson is going, and if their teaching strategies are reaching their students so that they are fully able to understand the content being taught. If we realize a trend of students unable to understand or respond to the content, then we know we must readjust our lesson so they we can reach each and every one of our students. This article does a great job of providing examples and strategies of how we can implement embedded assessment into our classrooms. It also explains that, even though we are assessing our students throughout the lesson, it is still important to assess our students after the lesson as well, to ensure each of our students are ready to move forward to the next material.
