Hello! I am in my final year of the Elementary Education program at Wright State University. I am due to graduate in Spring of 2022. I cannot wait to teach and positively influence the lives of many children!

In my current placement, we just did a unit on animals. We had students pick an animal and do research to fill out a graphic organizer. We also did an activity where we posted clues about different habitats and they had to determine which one it was. I think using worksheets is sometimes okay, but you want to use hands-on/minds-on activities as much as possible.

I completely agree with you. I think it is much more meaningful and equally as engaging to learn about plants and animals in our own environments. Although students find exotic animals interesting, I think lessons about local plants and animals would be more effective. Students can better connect to the material and inevitably learn more from them.

Chloe's suggestions are wonderful! It is so important to use students's interests to guide instruction and slowly build their stamina. Students will maintain focus and engagement in an activity/lesson that explores topics they enjoy. I would also suggest that you provide choices for students and connect to the real world in addition to students' interests.

I think that this resource in great in theory; however, the materials suggested for the unit are not the most accessible. I think that the structure of the lesson is great, and the idea of students working as detectives investigating clues is very engaging. I am wondering what else I could do to create the indoor exhibit.

This resource provides great examples of how to integrate new science vocabulary with science content in a Kindergarten unit about plants, animals, and their environment.

This resource is amazing. I adapted this unit and used it with my second grade class. My students were engaged throughout and all showed significant growth from the pre-assessment to the post-assessment.
