From my experience both as a student and as a student teacher, interactive notebooks are very beneficial even if it seems like the students are completely lost and that the whole idea was a waste of time. I really appreciate the advice given in this forum, and it makes me happy to see that there are productive ways to help students pass standardized testing without teaching to the test. This helps alleviate some of my fears about standardized testing, and I can't wait to have my own classroom next year.
