Although Bill's column is intended for elementary school teachers and their students, I love using his activities and demonstrations as hooks for the beginning of my weather unit in my high school Earth Science class. Not all students start at the same point in their science understanding and in high school, I can see a huge gap in understanding among my students. The activities described in this article are simple, but they allow me to evaluate students' prior knowledge as see where I may need to reteach and where I can move on.
