I was very impressed with the techniques used in this article to support vocabulary development. The use of accurate vocabulary and terms even in young classrooms, should be encouraged, but can be intimidating if the only instructional tool utilized is reviewing the definition. The use of storybooks to introduce different animals was a great tie to literacy. Many learning styles were used, Kinesthetic with the “fin dance”, visual with the pictures and auditory with discussions. All students had the opportunity to use the words they were learning authentically rather than just listing the meaning. The technology integration in the assessment piece was a great tool. I liked that teachers could develop different types of questions so that non-readers or even ELLs could show their understanding. I will definitely be applying some of these techniques in my classroom.
