Scientists and Engineers Are CLEVER (Grades 3–5)

by: Donna Farland-Smith and Julie Thomas

In this lesson, students learn that scientists and engineers are clever. They read about inventor Elijah McCoy in the book The Real MCoy: The Life of an African-American Inventor. After reading, they observe friction and apply oil to their model racetrack to observe the effects of a change in friction. This selection highlights the practice of constructing explanations (science) and designing solutions (engineering), and it includes the Table of Contents, Foreword, Acknowledgments, About the Authors, and Index.
