Invention activities are creative, engaging, and relevant ways to integrate engineering design into science class. High school students are capable of creating working prototypes of real, patentable inventions when they are working on problems about which they are passionate about; these types of projects can be classified as place-based and authentic inquiry. Two activities are included herein to provide entry points to integrate invention within the science classroom and to allow students to develop as inventors. This practice can prepare students for other invention opportunities within their schools and communities.
