Lesson Plan 3: Our Container Garden–Planting Time

by: Carla C. Johnson, Janet B. Walton, and Erin Peters-Burton

In this lesson, students continue to use the engineering design process (EDP) to create the class container garden. Students move into the Try phase as they construct the garden. Through the construction and planting of their container garden and subsequent observations, students begin to develop conceptual awareness of how living things grow and change. Students create an observation journal in which to track garden data on an ongoing basis. The Test and Improve phases of the EDP will be executed during the remainder of the school year as the class continues to observe and care for the garden. A materials list, teacher background information, safety practices, Internet resources, reference, suggested books, and outcomes are provided. This book selection includes the Table of Contents, About the Editors and Authors, Acknowledgments, and Index.
