This problem addresses students to develop ways to use direction and distance to describe position and motion. Students are members of a fire department rescue team who practice giving each other directions to get out of a smoke-filled room in a burning building. In this problem, students develop a system for describing position in the context of giving directions to a firefighter whom they cannot see. The problem can be adapted to any context with the same issues, such as someone who is lost in a forest with only a compass and a phone. A materials list, teacher background information, safety practices, assessment, and outcomes are provided. This book selection includes the Table of Contents, Preface, Catalog of Problems, Acknowledgments, About the Authors, Image Credits, and Index.
