In this problem, students compare the end velocities of cartoon characters that jumped up from, jumped down from, or fell from a cliff and landed in a river. Students are asked to design experiments to test the impact velocities of falling objects. The students need to learn about the force of gravity and the forces that influence the acceleration of an object in motion. They test ways to measure the effects of the forces while describing motion influenced by gravity. Students use a very simple setup to measure crater size as a way of determining relative velocities of impact. Students consider the effect on impact velocity of an object dropped from a height versus thrown up or down from the same height. A materials list, teacher background information, safety practices, assessment, and outcomes are provided. This book selection includes the Table of Contents, Preface, Catalog of Problems, Acknowledgments, About the Authors, Image Credits, and Index.
