The problems in this chapter ask students to identify basic needs of living things and to describe simple life cycles of animals, plants, and fungi. The problems involve students in a number of science practices included in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). In this problem, students learn about the life cycle of a fungus and compare the life cycles and body structures of fungi with those of other types of living things. The problem focus is on the life cycle of mushrooms, but can be modified for any fungus, such as bread mold, fungi on a rotting log, or fungi on a compost pile. A materials list, teacher background information, safety practices, references, assessment, and outcomes are provided. This book selection includes the Table of Contents, Preface, Catalog of Problems, Acknowledgments, About the Authors, References, and Index.
