Coldest Winter Ever!

by: Page Keeley and Laura Tucker

The purpose of this assessment probe is to elicit students’ ideas about weather versus climate. The probe is designed to find out if students distinguish between a one-time weather-related change and a change in climate. Weather and climate are related, but they are different things. Weather is the short-term conditions of the atmosphere and climate describes a long-term pattern of weather over many years, from decades to millions of years. This probe is best used with grades 3–8, and can be combined with the formative assessment classroom technique of lines of agreement. A materials list, teacher background information, references, assessment, and outcomes are provided. This book selection includes the Table of Contents, Foreword, Preface, Acknowledgments, About the Authors, Introduction, and Index.
