Is Natural Better?

by: Page Keeley and Laura Tucker

The purpose of this assessment probe is to elicit students’ ideas about natural versus human-engineered products. This probe is designed to uncover whether students think natural always means not harmful while some can be quite toxic, not only to insects but also to other organisms that you do not want to harm, such as pets and wildlife. This probe is best used with grades 5–12 and can be combined with the lines of agreement formative assessment classroom technique. A materials list, teacher background information, references, assessment, and outcomes are provided.
