The Greenhouse Effect

by: Page Keeley and Laura Tucker

The purpose of this assessment probe is to elicit students’ ideas about the greenhouse effect. The probe is designed to reveal whether students confuse the greenhouse effect with other environmental concerns or lump the concerns together. The greenhouse effect is often confused with global warming. Although the two are related, the greenhouse effect is the name scientists have given to Earth’s ability to retain heat and global warming is an increase in Earth’s overall temperature. This probe is best used with grades 6–12 and can be combined with the card sort formative assessment classroom technique. A materials list, teacher background information, references, assessment, and outcomes are provided. This book selection includes the Table of Contents, Foreword, Preface, Acknowledgments, About the Authors, Introduction, and Index.
