Ongoing Inquiry

by: Peggy Ashbrook

In this chapter, the objective of the activity “Properties of Water” is to engage children in ongoing inquiry by exploring a question or material (in this case, the properties of water) for a period of weeks, using productive questions to stimulate further exploration and discussion to develop understanding of the concepts. Chapters 1 and 2 are also included in this book selection. Chapter 1 focuses on science inquiry and the use of “The Early Years” column to support science and engineering learning. Chapter 2 focuses on assessment and the value of assessing children’s learning to understand how to make teaching more effective. It has an example of an assessment tool showing sequences of children’s science behavior in early childhood, with related scientific and engineering practices. A materials list, teacher background information, references, assessment, and outcomes are provided. Also included in the book selection are the Table of Contents, Acknowledgments, Introduction, A Word About Safety, and Index.
