Outdoor STEM Classroom Design Challenge

edited by: Carla C. Johnson, Janet B. Walton, and Erin Peters-Burton

In this lesson, students continue to use the engineering design process (EDP) to create their outdoor STEM classroom. They investigate the phenomenon of seed dispersion and its effects on the environment and use the EDP to construct seed dispersal devices. They continue to explore fictional works by creating stories about gardening that incorporate illustrations. Working as a class, students create an observation journal to use on an ongoing basis to track data about the outdoor STEM classroom. In this lesson, they will progress through the Try stage of the EDP with the remaining EDP stages (Test, Decide, and Share) to be executed in the long term as they observe and assess their design of the outdoor STEM classroom. A materials list, safety notes, standards, teacher background information, assessment, and Internet resources are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, About the Editors and Authors, Acknowledgments, Appendix A, B, and C, and Index.
