Anatomy of a Nuclear Accident

edited by: Carla C. Johnson, Janet B. Walton, and Erin Peters-Burton

In this lesson, students continue their consideration of nuclear fission and its practical application in power plants by examining the events leading to the 1979 Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear accident and the response. They analyze a multidisciplinary primary source document giving an account from the perspectives of science, mathematics, public relations, and public policy. Although this investigation is presented as a science activity, it may also take place in mathematics, social studies, or English language arts (ELA) class, or in a combination of classes. A materials list, standards, safety notes, teacher background information, assessment, Internet resources, and references are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, About the Editors and Authors, Acknowledgments, Appendix, and Index.

NSTA Press produces classroom-ready activities, hands-on approaches to inquiry, relevant professional development, the latest scientific education news and research, assessment and standards-based instruction.
