Faster, Higher, and Safer

edited by: Carla C. Johnson, Janet B. Walton, and Erin Peters-Burton

In this lesson, students investigate types of energy transfer and run simulations to consider design factors for amusements such as speed, height, and sustainability. To get a sense of the physics behind the amusements, students will participate in two design processes—a Rube Goldberg machine and a trebuchet. They will use these common experiences as a launching pad for the design of their amusement. We recommend reading Chapter 3, which is included in this book selection and provides a module overview and summary. A materials list, safety notes, standards, teacher background information, assessment, references, and Internet resources are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, About the Editors and Authors, Acknowledgments, Appendix, and Index.
