The Race for Tall Towers

edited by: Carla C. Johnson, Janet B. Walton, and Erin Peters-Burton

In this lesson, students learn the basics about construction materials, the construction processes used in building tall towers, and the forces and geometry associated with static structures. To be able to understand the science and mathematics involved in building tall towers, students also learn metacognitive strategies to synthesize complex ideas in the English language arts. And, to further complement and add to their knowledge and skills, they investigate the symbolism of tall towers and their historical and social influence on humans in social studies class. We recommend reading Chapter 3, which is included in this book selection and provides a module overview and summary. A materials list, safety notes, standards, assessment, teacher background information, Internet resources, and references are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, About the Editors and Authors, Acknowledgments, Appendix, and Index.
